Bronze Sculpture
Name: Tribute of Raoul Wallenberg
Artist: Joseph Wachtel
Wallenberg is a big bronze — 2 ft. by 3 ft and 100 pounds. The Story: ”I’m a sculptor. And I had to make a tribute to Wallenberg, and here’s the reason why. During the II World War, even though my mother-in-law had a Wallenberg passport in her hands, she was thrown into a boxcar and shipped to Auschwitz. When we came to Budapest, my wife knew she had relatives there. We looked for them and we found one aunt and she told us they also had Wallenberg papers in their hands and they jumped out of the boxcars, but my wife’s mother couldn’t. When we heard that story, you can imagine what Wallenberg meant to me and to her. We were there when Wallenberg was operating during the liberation of the Russian army in January 1945. We were in Budapest. We learned about it. All my life, for 60 years, Wallenberg was always a hero, and being a sculptor I felt I had to do it.” J. Wachtel.

”It is 1989, and you have just been let into a cell in Lubyanka Prison in
Moscow. The man on the cot in front of you slowly rises to look at you. He is Raoul Wallenberg. You have come to inform him the world did not forget. My vision of Wallenberg’s heroic strength captures that moment.”
Bronze Sculpture
Name: Freedom
Artist: Karoly Veress
The 10-foot bronze sculpture, created by Hungarian-born artist Karoly Veress, is a gift of Mrs. Isador Katz, Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Harris, and Mr. and Mrs. Zeivel Harris. The location is noteworthy because Veress says Freedom was inspired by Raoul Wallenberg, the Swedish humanitarian credited with saving as many as 100,000 Hungarian Jews from the Holocaust. Although Veress fled Hungary as a result of Soviet intervention in the Hungarian Revolution of 1956, he remembers Wallenberg’s heroism and says the new sculpture responds to his legacy of freedom. ”In this design I symbolize freedom in wings, partly protecting, and sheltering, but foremost enabling us to rise above the daily confusions. These wings sometimes lift us up out of the monstrous historic context into a state where all that remains is just one commitment: to human values, to the dignity of all human beings.”
