The heroism of former Swedish diplomat Raoul Wallenberg will be remembered tonight at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 17 at the Gelber Conference Centre.
Wallenberg is credited during World War II with helping to save some 100,000 Hungarian Jews from being transported to Nazi concentration camps. He was arrested by the Soviets on Jan. 17, 1945 and jailed on suspicion of being an American spy. Wallenberg became an honourary Canadian citizen in 1985 and, in 2001, the Canadian government declared a commemorative day Jan. 17.
Today’s event will also mark the 15th anniversary of the Raoul Wallenberg International Movement for Humanity, headed by Dr. Vera Parnes.
”Raoul Wallenberg epitomizes human morality, which opposes violence, humiliation and discrimination,” Parnes says. ”His example helps us to build bridges between people of different backgrounds.”
